What does it mean to be multi-passionate? And WHY does it intimidate so many of us?
For much of my time in corporate, even business school in college, a major piece of advice many people gave me was to choose ONE thing. To become so good at a singular skill or task that it would be what I was primarily known for. So, I followed that belief.
Not long after I landed my job as an Executive Assistant, I became known for my exceptional business skills- but more so supporting hedge fund CEOs. Even though I climbed the financial ladder with ease, I felt incredibly empty. I was so good at supporting other people’s objectives- I lost sight of my own. And I felt so suffocated because honestly, no one gave me the opportunity to go find them!
I dreamt of the day I could do what I WANTED, and that changed frequently! Some days I wanted to give unforgettable TED talks, other days I wanted to create my own kick-ass business- I even thought about writing New York Times bestsellers! Yet everyday I dreamt, I desired to do ANYTHING but be behind the scenes. I wanted to be SEEN and HEARD as myself, not what everybody expected.
I tried MANY different side hustles just to get one foot out of the corporate door. I made scrubs with herbs from my garden, wanted to flip mobile homes, even brainstormed a window washing company. Encountering new avenues for work each only motivated me to try my hand at everything, because it all seemed so much more fulfilling than the toxic cycle I was stuck in.
So, fast forward to now- I’m an internationally recognized Life Coach, I have a meaningful business, I love spending time in hot yoga or making memories with my family, and I make time to travel- I lead a life that caters to ALL my passions.
Just like you, I KNOW I am meant for more. Which is why I shed my conditioned belief that being “multi-passionate” is not the ideal approach to success. And you should as well babes.
To be “multi-passionate” means creating joy in various activities + pleasures. And hey, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to one thing; that makes sense to some people and it works for THEM. But like how some people gravitate towards a single goal, other people feel most aligned with their lives when they explore multiple interests.
Multi-passionate people get overwhelmed a lot of the time because we have SO many ideas, but never know which to pursue or HOW to pursue them. The lack of direction or clarity is what causes us to freeze and do… nothing! That’s where we encounter most of the discouragement, but it isn’t entirely our fault. Traditional success has conditioned us to believe that there’s ONE path to feeling abundant, only ONE way to achieve our goals.
In the Sparkle System Coaching Certification + Six Figure Business School I encourage all my students to explore their passions by fully embracing their ENTIRE selves, not just one piece of them. I typically implement this through exercises that question ALL areas of their life, and describe their current reality versus their desired reality. Bridging the gap between the current and desired realities illuminates all the new ideas they want to create the time + energy for. Creating passion rather than having it is when I observe the most momentous shifts!
I used to see “multi-passionate” as a bad thing, and I’m sure you have as well. I say fuck that, the only road to your successful is the one YOU create. And that is a very individual, special journey we all go through. How can you thrive as a multi-passionate creator/influencer, entrepreneur, or coach? Find YOUR balance.
